My (Short) Time at University of Mary Washington.

I have always been a very independent person, and attending college was a must for me achieve my dream of being a scientist. So naturally, a four year college seemed like the right path. I’ve never struggled with being away from home for long periods, even though my family and I don’t always get along. Still, I love them deeply and would do anything for them. I was excited to leave home and build a life for myself to move beyond family issues. However, when move in day arrived, I found myself uncontrollably sobbing. I spent the entire day with my parents crying nonstop. It was to the point that a waiter at the restaurant we visited offered her phone number in case I needed anything while I was at school. My unhappiness stayed for months. During my first semester at Mary Washington, I stayed in my dorm only two of the sixteen weekends. The rest of the time, I went home. My biggist stresser was not having time for a job. I had been working since I was sixteen, and suddenly not having an income felt very limiting. My parents were incredibly supportive and they never hesitated to pick me up when I asked, but eventually, we had to have a serious conversation: Should I transfer? Previously, I had tried to join the Army ROTC program Mary Washington is affiliated with, but my plans fell through when I lost my ride and had to withdraw. Transferring to NOVA would make joining the Army or Air Force much easier, offering a path to achieve my goals while also providing financial security for my family, who were struggling to afford the cost of Mary Washington. In the end, I decided to transfer. I’ve come to terms with my decision and am excited about starting my new journey at NOVA.
